Hi, all,
My MIL has been warming up DD's frozen ebm bottles in a bowl of hot water after it has thawed.like what everyone does. I read, however, in the Madela pump in style's manual yesterday that we shouldnt put ebm in a pan of boiling water. Can someone define whether a pan of boiling water means a pan of water with the water still boiling on top of the gas stove or does it include water poured out from those kept warm electrical water pot? Hope i didn’t confuse anyone out there. For the moment, we are using the bottle warmer till I get clarification. It seems a silly question to ask because logically one should stand the milk in a pan of hot water. It’s just that the milk always turn a shade “yellower” after being warmed and the Madela’s manual on the words, “pan of hot boiling water” plays on my mind because of the “yellowing”and because of the excess lipase in my ebm making it sour faster and I still like to be sure.

I'm no expert but from what I've read the slower you warm the milk the better. I've heard that using a slower method will affect the taste less and do less damage to the actual milk.

So to me it a pan of boiling water doesn't seem like the best way. By the way, I take that to mean boiling on the stove.

Good question. I quit freezing my ebm because my D absolutely would not drink it! She just didn't like the taste. But anyway, I wouldn't put the milk directly in boiling water. I would boil the water first then turn off the heat and let it settle down a bit and then put the milk in to thaw.

I would suggest asking a Lactation Consultant to be certain or you could call the La Leche League. They could help you with that question.

Thanks, girls. I guess just as much. standing in a pan of boiling water doesnt sound very common. i wonder why the manual specifically says not to do it. Most people would just stand it in a pan of boiled hot water instead of boiling water. in that case, i would just tell mil to continue doing what she used to do, i.e. pour hot boiled water out from our electrical kept warm hot water pot and stand the bottle in it to warm.

Rockrose, my DD hates thawed ebm nowadays as well. could it be because they have gotten smarter? i now chill them in the fridge if it is to be consumed the very next day unless i need to stash them for MIL for the whole week. Even then, when MIL warms the milk, the milk would turn from white to yellow. must be the lipase at work

I read some where that it is normal for it to turn yellow after being frozen. I'm out of town right now and don't have any of books w/me, otherwise I would look it up.

Maybe they don't like the taste due to freezer burn?
