Hey there!

My name's Shelli and I am married to a wonderful man named Patrick. I have 2 wonderful girls, ages 5 and 2 months. Myr and Ella, respectively. Myr was adopted by me at birth and Ella is a biological child. We are getting around to Patrick adopting Myr now. I'm a babywearing, breastfeeding, co-sleeping, natural healing, some day to homeschool mommy, but for all that I'm still pretty conservative politically.

I was an army brat, but consider myself from Monterey, CA where my husband and I left 2 years ago. We deperately miss the communal living system with my in-laws and hope to be able to go back to that someday.

I guess that's about it.

Shelli

A warm welcome to you Shelli! I love the names you picked for your children. Now is Myr, pronounced "My Errr"?
What does co-sleeping mean?
Please make yourself comfortable at MummyBrain. We hope to see you real soon on the message boards. :)

Thank you! Myr is pronounced the same as the first syllable of mirror. It's actually short for Myriam. Co-sleeping=Ella shares our bed and likely will for a couple of years.

We don't have the 'typical' story as I didn't adopt for fertility reasons.

I married my first husband in 2000. He was in the Navy and on a ship, we decided that as long as he was on the ship, I would stay in my hometown. This meant we really had little chance of getting pregnant. Friends of ours turned up pregnant and we found out a weekend he was home and I cracked a joke about adopting their baby, this was acceptable since I knew they were at a loss as to what to do since they didn't want to keep it. They responded positively, but that was it, just joking around, right? My husband went back to the ship and I thought more about it.

We decided we really did want to adopt their baby. I wasn't comfortable approaching them on a serious note, so I made a comment to a mutual friend that we had decided to adopt but that it was very expensive and hard to find a mother. This had the desired effect as she said she might know someone and went righ to them and told them. She came back to me and told me that she had someone for me. That's when I told her I knew and had hoped she would do what she did.

So anyway, long story short...I left my husband and he decided to back out of the adoption. I adopted her as a single parent 2 months after she turned 3. It took so long because of the divcorce situation with my then husband.

Did you take her from day 1, or when?

yep, she came home from the hospital with me. someone asked me the other day why I adopted, and my answer was that Karen had my baby in her belly.

Do her birth parents have much to do with her?

Not too much. Karen called on Thanksgiving to say hi and Nathan (her birthfather) called on her birthday. That was nice since we haven't spoken to him in a couple of years.
