whats the link with diabetic and big and small babies????

lilacmoonbeam
22nd September 2007, 10:34 PM
It's to do with glucose levels in the blood hun.

A diabetic is unable to control their own glucose levels, hence they go up and down alot, e.g. if you take too much insulin or do alot of activity then the body burns up sugar and the levels can plummet really low which is called a "hypo", or sometimes they can go to high if we eat alot of sugary food or don't take enough insulin etc, during pregnancy the glucose levels can become more difficult to control with all the raging hormones going about the body.
I must have had slightly raised glucose levels, although they weren't too high as I was monitoring it very closely in pregnancy and in the latter stages the levels were between 6.9-8.0 normally when non diabetics usually have levels between 4.1-6.5 or something like that.
The raised levels of glucose are converted to energy and fat which the baby stores as it crosses the placenta, that's why alot of the time diabetics have big babies, I'm not 100% sure on the small baby link, but it could be a number of things.
That's why when even non diabetics who don't eat alot during pregnancy can give birth to small babies.
Hope that made sense.. lol..

Yip makes sense. Thanks for that. Its hard to understand things when you dont have to go through it yourself.

For me, i was keeping my levels strictly as low as i was told too, no cheating at all. Unfortunately my placenta broke down at 33 weeks (due to diabeties), and wasn't discovered until 36 weeks, by which time D was starving inside me, as he'd hardly been feed since 33 weeks.

Next pregnancy i had to take aspirin to make the placenta grown larger by artificial means.

Man you guys had it hard, i honestly couldnt image goign through that aye.

lilacmoonbeam

I was also keeping my control as low as possible in fact in pregnancy it was better controlled than ever before even the diabetic nurse said "your virtually at non-diabetic levels" on the HB1C or whatever it's called. But still it didn't deter Aidan from being 9lbs 3oz at birth pmsl.

Sorry you went through all that Kirsty I didn't realise that could happen :( Was it due to pre-eclampsia???

i had pregnancy diabetes and had to be on insulin injects twice a day :( into my tummy... only had to put up with it for a month as they didnt test me till 31wks(i had full blowen diabetes, my test result came back 14.) and my bubba was born at 35wks by emerncy c-section due to he had stoped growing.

he was tiny too. a 5pounder 1oz.. they were expecting a 6pounder. but found my placenta was a third dead. docter belives me having pregnancy diabetes saved jacobs life. so next time there gonna do scans from three mths, monthly scans to see why the placenta gave in just incase it happens again.. they believe he didnt implant proply but he hang in. i had bleeding at 5wks two days b4 i knew i was pregnant.

docter told me theres a 80% chance of getting diabetes again, and 20% of getting placenta infarctions.

and they'll be testing for pregnancy daibetes earlier etc. i would always try and be soo good with my food and then my mother in law would give me a plain biscut that had chocolate on one side telling me its ok to eat it. grrr...and bf teasing me with sweets and pies grr oh well he has to live with it next time we have another baby lol.

at my baby shower mum made healthy food for it and i ended up eatting too much grapes which made my sugars go high! we hadnt thought that grapes were full of sugar.

i hated doing the finger pricks and fasting for two hours between meals that was hard.

oh wow and i moaned about having it for a month lol. its stopped me from getting pregnant soo soon, i wanted to give my body a rest , its been three years since i got pregnant, ive given my body two year break since his birth, plus my midwife told me to wait 18mths b4 getting pregnant again because i had a c-section. Specialist said i could get pregnant after 6mths if i wanted too.

lilacmoonbeam
27th September 2007, 12:54 AM
lol.. I had a section too, and no one told me how long to wait before having another baby.. (not that I want one yet anyway).. but they probably really should have.. they weren't too hot actually when it came to paperwork, they didn't tell the community midwives I had been discharged, apparently because I had come out of Transitional Care instead of the normal post natal ward.. .. hmm it always happens to me lol

Kirsty

I have type 2, so only inject once a day. But my levels are excellent at the moment, so i only do my testing 2 days a week 4 times a day (the finger tests).
It's hereditary, not from being fat.
